Our Story Starts With You

We started this academic year with that promise; that you, our fellow Benildeans whose talents, trials, and triumphs fill our pages, are the source of our inspiration.

We started this academic year with that promise; that you, our fellow Benildeans whose talents, trials, and triumphs fill our pages, are the source of our inspiration. Without you, we wouldn’t be the organization we are now.

Since the Campus Journalism Act of 1991 was passed, the Benildean Press Corps has worked towards becoming an instrument that bridges the gap between the students and the College. Beyond that, we worked to become a platform for the community to showcase its talents and skills.

In particular, our flagship title and the College’s official newspaper, The Benildean, has been graced with the extraordinary history of Benilde. The Benny, as we in the BPC call it, is a canvas on which generations of Benildeans have painted their colorful stories. This was the tradition we wanted to uphold.

However, the digital age challenged this tradition.

Last year, we were faced with a lot of difficult decisions to make as we realized the trends towards digital media. In the era of social networks and online reportage, print media for news wasn’t faring well enough. According to the survey we conducted in the College last year, 76% of Benildeans prefer getting news and updates online: 39% prefer Facebook, 25% prefer Twitter, and 22% prefer news websites.

Information is moving practically everywhere, following users wherever they go. It not only needs to be gathered and delivered properly, but also packaged just right to suit its demand. Our Creative Director last year, Martin Diegor, tackled this in his thesis entitled, “Print Matters”, a documentary film on the continued relevance of print media in the digital age. Through his research and the survey we conducted, we realized that if we wanted to remain responsive to the needs and interests of our readers, we had to create something different.

For you, we had to be different.

How then? First, we published most of our stories on our digital platforms. On Facebook, Twitter, and here on our website is where you will find all the latest goings-on of everything Benildean—when they happened and, more importantly, just as they unfold.

But stories don’t continue by themselves alone. They spread and grow with every share that makes them known, with every comment that pushes them to becoming a more critical point for consideration. Besides a platform for stories and updates, our website becomes a forum where your voices can be heard.

In terms of our printed publications, we have decided, after much deliberation, to give you something that would not only keep you updated with Benildean current affairs, but also preserve the emotions, ideologies, and people that weaves unto those stories. Our stories may have their space on the Web, but on The Benildean, they will have a better home in history.

So, without further ado, I am honored to present to you our paradigm shift, our big change, the product of the inspiration you have given us: the first volume of our revamped flagship title, The Benildean, and our revamped website, thebenildean.org.
