As an active songwriter, Barnuevo would look forward to the annual launch of the contest which is promoted in television and social media. “I’ve been writing songs since my early 20’s. I actually got the idea of writing the song from my experience with one of my exes,” Barnuevo explained.

“Parang Tayo Pero Hindi” is a dialogue between two people who find themselves intimate in many levels, but lack or avoid a deeper sense of commitment. People with experiences like “mutual understanding (M.U.)”, a no-strings-attached relationship, or even “FuBu’s” can relate very well to the said song.

He then mentioned that selected Multimedia Arts (MMA) students were assigned to produce the music video for this song, adding that there is a possibility Music Production students also might have joined the contest, particularly the previous students of Mr. Cayabyab’s Elements Songwriting Camp like Barnuevo.

Considering music as his second profession, Barnuevo has been active in the local music scene since 2004 holding various stints from performing live on-stage as keyboardist, all the way to producing songs in the studio—adding that songwriting is definitely an area where he’s very passionate at.

According to Barnuevo, he was also finalist of the Philippine Popular Music Festival (Philpop) back in 2013, which was headed by Mr. Ryan Cayabyab and Manny Pangilinan. “I believe that I contribute to the success of Original Pilipino Music (OPM) when I take part in competitions like these.”
