Blazers demolish Chiefs, arrange Finals showdown with Perpetual

The De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) Blazers won their 10th straight game, sweeping the Arellano University (AU) Chiefs (3-0) to book themselves a ticket to the championship of the 92nd Season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men’s Volleyball tournament today at the San Juan Arena.

Blazer Isah Arada started the game strong for the boys in green and white. Despite a close first set, the Blazers managed to pull away during the end (27-25) thanks to Arada’s down-the-line attacks.

In the second set, the Chiefs bounced back to take an early lead. However, the Taft squad turned to their defensive strategy to get through the set. Most Valuable Player candidate JohnVic DeGuzman’s 15 points in the game also helped the team pull through alongside Arada and Mark Orian’s 21 combined points to finish the second set in their favor (25-21).

In the third and final set, the Blazers were set on finishing the game. DeGuzman and crew capitalized on their easy spikes down the court of the Chiefs.

When Blazer Jordan Martinez hit an ace for the 25th point of Benilde, the squad officially secured their slot in the finals of the tournament where they will face the University of Perpetual Health System DALTA (UPHSD) Altas.

The Blazers, currently on a 10-game winning streak, find themselves in the NCAA Finals for the first time ever. The last time Benilde was in the finals in the Men’s Volleyball tournament, was in 1980, where the College won the championship, still under De La Salle University (DLSU) Manila.

Now, the Blazers have a chance to bring home the gold back to Taft Avenue. They will take on the Altas, the team they swept in the eliminations round, on Friday, February 3 at The Arena, San Juan.
