After leading the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) to their first historic National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men’s volleyball championship, Team Captain John Vic De Guzman and setter Mark Deximo may soon be back on the court, but this time to represent the Philippines in the 29th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games).
In a forum by the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) yesterday, March 14, Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. (LVPI) revealed the names chosen for the 25-man Men’s national volleyball team pool from which the final 12 players will be selected to play. It is De Guzman’s second time to be invited to the SEA games, since his first go last year, but now he is joined by Deximo.
“It’s an honor to become part of the line up and I’m so blessed to represent and bring the different colors of the flag of our country for the second time,” De Guzman said in an interview with The Benildean.
If selected in the final 12, both players will play in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from August 19 to 31.
“If ever given a chance to be part of the final 12, I can say that this is really a good year para sa akin. From my showbiz break, to MVP, to the championship, then if ever for the Philippine Team slot, I am just blessed,” De Guzman added.
De Guzman and Deximo will join other players such as John Sarcena and Geuel Asia of the De La Salle University (DLSU) Spikers, former two-time NCAA MVP Howard Mojica of Philippine Air Force, DLSU-Dasma’s (DLSU-D) Eddiemar Kasim, Jack Kalingking of University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (UPHSD) and Erickson Ramos of Meralco.
The Philippines will be facing neighbor countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Malaysia, among others, in the SEA Games. Training for the SEA Games will begin today, March 15.
