The De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) Blazers failed to redeem themselves in the 11th Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup by being overpowered by the offense of the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws (67-73) yesterday, May 17, at the Filoil Flying V Centre, San Juan.
Facing the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 79 runner up, the Blazers started the opening quarter stronger than their previous games. The improved defense of the Taft-based squad challenged the offensive strategy of the Tamaraws.
Blazers big man, Clement Leutcheu, once again led the way for the Blazers, contributing early points from the field. However, the Tamaraws capitalized on their offense, ending the quarter with a (18-26), in their favor.
During the second period, the Morayta-based squad continued their rhythm after opening the quarter with back to back threes. While on the other side, the Blazers struggled from errors and turnovers, which the Tamaraws used to their advantage and pulled away to end the first half with a 14-point lead (43-29)
The clamouring offense of the UAAP contender continued to the second half where they outscored Benilde thanks to their three-point shots. Despite the series of turnovers from before, Benilde rallied to keep up with the game with the help of Leutcheu’s 11 points and nine rebounds as well as JJ Domingo’s 11 points.
The boys in green and white managed to shoot baskets in the dying minutes of the game cutting their opponent’s lead to six. However, their lingering momentum could not escape the 17-point advantage of the Tamaraws, (67-73) adding another loss to their streak.
The Blazers are still hoping to get back on the winning column as they face University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons on May 21, Sunday, at Filoil Flying V Centre, San Juan.
