When Greek myth meets Filipino artistry

Combine the timeless charm of Greek mythology, the seasoned talent of director Riki Benedicto, and the passionate artistry of Benilde’s very own theater company Dulaang Filipino (DF), and you get Oedipus—a phenomenal and internationally-acclaimed production with student-artists on center stage.

This month, DF is restaging Oedipus for the third time since 2014, bringing to a life the great tragedian Sophocles’ Theban trilogy through powerful choreography, stunning stage design, and a brilliant ensemble cast. Experience a different take on the Greek tragedy as the production paints the setting of a local tribe struggling for power, while characters exchange dialogue in the Filipino language.

After recently being recognized as the “Best International Amateur Theatrical Show” at the Confederación de Teatro Amateur in Madrid, Spain last April, Oedipus is representing the Philippines in the 14th Teatralny Koufar International Theater Festival in Minsk, Belarus from Sept. 20 to 28, where a total of 21 theater companies from all over the world will be competing for a variety of awards.

As part of DF’s fundraising for the upcoming competition, Oedipus will be showcased at the School of Design and Arts theater on Sept. 13 (3pm) and 14 (10am and 3pm). Tickets are sold just for P150.
