The Arellano University Chiefs stunned the Blazers with a final score of 95-65.
Losing by as much as 30 points, the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) Blazers surrendered to the Arellano University (AU) Chiefs (65-95) in the 93rd Season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men’s basketball tournament yesterday, Oct. 5, at the Filoil Flying V Centre, San Juan.
As early as the first quarter, the AU Chiefs already overpowered the Blazers with their defensive plays and offensive barrage which resulted in a total of 50% field goal average against Blazers’ 39.66% throughout the game. With the momentum in favor of the Chiefs, they ended the opening quarter with a 12-point margin for the next period (28-16).
In the second period, the Chiefs did not show any sign of slowing down while the Blazers, led by Kendrix Belgica who played with 18 points and eight rebounds together with JJ Domingo’s 14 points, struggled to make their baskets. The first half ended Benilde down by 14 points (47-33).
Hopeful to notch another win before the season ends, the Blazers tried to shift the momentum to their side during the second half but their efforts were not enough to gain control over Chiefs’ Kent Salado and Zach Nichols who supplied 19 and 16 points to their squad.
The Blazers’ rhythm from the previous quarter did not push through. With the Chiefs’ double-digit advantage from the previous quarters, the Taft-based squad was easily overpowered and found themselves far behind the Chiefs by the end of the game (95-65).
Yesterday’s loss marks the Blazers’ thirteenth loss of the season. With a game left, the Blazers (3-13) still have a chance to improve their standings as they face the Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) Generals (6-9) next Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Arena, San Juan.
