The San Beda College Red Booters kept their back-to-back title hopes alive at the expense of the Blazers.
With a twice-to-beat advantage, the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) Men’s football team lost to the San Beda College (SBC) Red Booters (2-0) yesterday, January 8, forcing a do-or-die match tomorrow for a slot in the finals, in the 93rd season of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium, Manila.
The Blazers, earning the top seed with a 4-1-1 win-draw-loss record at the semis, failed to book themselves an express ticket to the championship when the Red Booters, who ranked fourth in the semis with a 2-1-3 record, bested them 2-0.
San Beda ignited to a quick advantage early in the game thanks to Wally Magtoto’s first goal. As the defense of the Taft squad tightened to prevent the Red Booters from scoring another goal, they found themselves having trouble getting into position to secure goals of their own.
Entering the second half, the Blazers appeared to have a stronger play by being more active in both offense and defense. However, their efforts were not enough as the Mendiola squad continued to show their dominance on the field and dramatically secured the match by earning their second goal through Nimrod Balabat just a few minutes before the time ran out.
Because of yesterday’s loss, San Beda has forced a do-or-die game versus Benilde tomorrow, January 10, at Rizal Memorial Football Stadium, Manila.
