MMA student wins shirt design contest with message of helping others

A Benildean Multimedia Arts student bested over 150 t-shirt designs by other students to win the grand prize.

A fourth year Multimedia Arts (MMA) student, Maria Antonette Perez, was declared the Grand Winner of insurance company Pioneer and Team Manila’s ‘Big Heart: Graphic T-shirt Design Contest’ for her design named “Isang Lahi, Isang Puso” last February 1 at the Greenbelt 5 Gallery, Makati.

Perez submitted a total of three designs for the contest and one of her designs was selected for the Top 10 preliminary judging. Last Thursday, February 1, she was hailed the grand winner, defeating over 150 t-shirt designs by other students. Her design was judged based on idea/concept, creativity and execution, and wearability of the design, which her creation conveyed the message of diversity, respect, service, and nationhood.

The competition aimed to use the skills and creativity of young artists who are officially enrolled in any school, colleges, or universities in the Philippines, to inspire and encourage the Filipino people to practice kindness in their daily lives through a graphic t-shirt that Filipinos will proudly wear.

According to the theme of the event, which is kindness, “[it] is the trait, which is inherently Filipino, that we would like to shine the spotlight on.”

“I was inspired because I wanna design something that will inspire other people and [will] want to wear proudly,” Perez said when asked what inspired her to join the contest.
Perez received a cash prize of ₱50,000 plus an insurance coverage and the opportunity to earn from her design through Team Manila’s online store.

Other winners include first runner-up Joshua Rei Panaligan (“Taos Puso”) from University of Makati and the second runner-up Michaela Balagapo (“Kindness without end”) from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.

The top three “Big Heart Shirts” will be sold online for ₱495 via Team Manila’s Online Store, Suez and Zapote Gallery, and Lazada on March 1, 2018.
