Bikeyanihan: Benilde students help Filipino workers go the distance amid transportation

“No act of kindness is too small and, collectively, they will all make an impact in the lives of the people we’re helping. You just have to look around and take action. Since we’re blessed, we also have to be a blessing to others.” -Bikeyanihan

With public transportation issues and limitations brought about by lockdown restrictions, many Filipino workers are forced to walk everyday, regardless of distance or weather. “Bikeyanihan,” a fundraising campaign initiated by a group of students from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, aims to help resolve this problem by providing workers with their own bicycles.

The group was inspired by the story of bicycle shop owner Fe Carandang, whose shop is based in Pasay City, and candy seller Carlo Samonte. Samonte had been trying to convince Carandang to sell him a bike at a discounted price since May, as he had no means of transportation to and from his work in Nichols due to the enhanced community quarantine. Carandang eventually decided to give him the bike for free, as she understood Samonte’s struggle.

Marley Alconera, graphic designer and one of the founders of Bikeyanihan, expressed that she and the rest of the group knew there are many Filipinos like Samonte, who have to walk to work everyday.

“We thought there might be some way we could help them, one bicycle at a time,” she said in an interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

In an online interview with The Benildean, Nikki Angeles expressed that despite for only over a month since the campaign started, they have been receiving overwhelming support from the public. However, the group aims to reach a wider audience and “to reach more donors to provide more bikes and safer ones too.”

Furthermore, when asked about the screening process for potential beneficiaries from direct applications and referrals, Angeles disclosed that the group ensures that they choose those who are in most need and deserving of the bicycles, as they only have limited resources.

“We also make sure to set a time wherein the whole team deliberates on the potential beneficiaries to double check the profiles, stories, and backgrounds of each individual,” Angeles stated.

The campaign was founded by nine members; graphic designers Marley Alconera, Joni De Guzman, JP Anonuevo, Yvette Cruz, Marge Abordo, marketing professional Nikki Angeles, and students Nicole Dyogi, Leslie Dy, and Ericka De Castro.

Bikeyanihan is now accepting donations for their third batch of bikes, which can be sent to the following accounts:
