Coming off a blowout win against the Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) Generals, the De La Salle College of Saint Benilde Blazers lost their chance to enter the playoff round as they fell prey in the hands of Colegio De San Juan de Letran (CSJL) Knights (69-79), last Thursday, at The Arena, San Juan.|
The Blazers entered the game with a sluggish start, falling into an early eight point deficit in the opening quarter. Carlo Young made a reviving trifecta, sparking the offensive push of the Blazers, John Domingo chipped in 7 points off the bench together with Jonathan Grey’s 5 points, fueling a commanding nine point lead ending the first quarter (22-13).
Entering the second quarter, Domingo and Grey manned the offensive set, keeping the Knights at bay. However the Intramuros cagers Kevin Racal and Mark Cruz exposed the zone defense, sinking a barrage of treys, capping a 9-0 run tying the game with 2 and a half minutes left in the half . The Knights have a two point lead entering the second half,(40-38).
The competing squad exchanged blows on the third period, Jeffrey Ongteco capitalizes on the paint snatching a two-point lead from the Knights, (56-54).
Entering the money quarter, the backcourt of Benilde committed turnovers, because of the Knights full court pressure. The Knights never looked back and held on to their double digit lead at the final buzzer, 69-79. Mark Cruz led the game hitting 20 points for the Knights, while both Grey and JJ Domingo led the Blazers with 14 points in a losing effort.
Improving their 3-11 record, the Blazers will challenge University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (UPHSD) Atlas this coming Friday, September 18, at the Arena, San Juan.
