Besting over 100 entries nationwide, Bachelor of Arts in Animation alumna Edwig Paguia took home the grand prize and title of the Heneral Luna fan art contest, with her pen and ink illustration depicting Heneral Luna’s “bravery and determination” as well as the treachery that led to his fall.

“May mas malaki tayong kalaban sa Amerikano-ang ating sarili,” she captioned in her Instagram post of the illustration. She then interpreted the illustration writing that the color red on Heneral Luna symbolizes bravery and the blue on his head symbolizing his putting of the country’s sovereignty first before himself. The torn flag symbolized “the traitors who choose their own interests over our country,” whereas the blue soldiers symbolized the people who are willing to die for freedom; the blindfolded soldiers were the traitors blinded by their personal interests and the silhouettes of men were traitors fighting “for something that contradicts what Luna’s fighting for”.
