In the last four months, De La Salle- College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) took the centerstage mostly in theater, film, and advocacies in and out the country. The spotlight was also directed to the kind and humble hearts who served the College well. Presenting the third and final part of Benilde’s Best of 2015, revisit some of Benilde’s viral moments one last time.
SEPTEMBER
#ComicalComics: “We found love in a hopeless face”
The Benildean’s #ComicalComics presented its most viral post yet, an illustration by Sofia Abellera inspired by Pixar’s short film, “Lava”. The webcomic so far gained 3,190 likes and 1,927 shares.
Dulaang Filipino stages in Quebec
Dulaang Filipino (DF) represented the College as well as the country in their restaging of “Oedipus” in the annual Mont-Laurier International Theatre Festival in Québec, Canada last September 10-16. DF’s resident actress and Interior Design student Christine Bas who played Antigone was nominated for the Best Actress award.

Shades of Gray Promotional Video
With the theme “paranoia”, this year’s Shades of Gray, the official literary folio of the College, intrigued the Benildean community with a creepily mysterious camera footage of the campus hallways and a voice-warped video interview of people that appeared to be asylum patients. Giving them emotions of fear and curiosity, the video became The Benildean Press Corps’ (BPC) most successful folio campaign yet.
Noise Barrage for Lumad Killings
St. Scholastica’s College organized a noise barrage to raise awareness on the issue of the Lumad killings. The College’s Center for Social Action (CSA) also made efforts to spread awareness throughout the community through photo exhibits and meeting events with the tribe’s representatives during the Lumad Week. Sace Natividad of the BPC was able to capture the moment.
Benilde alumnus nominated at ‘Move Awards 2015’
“If every young person sees that he has worth, then he can do more.” Lord Leomer Pomperada, an AB Consular and Diplomatic Affairs (CDA) graduate and President of the World Youth Alliance, was nominated for Global Mover awardee in Rappler’s 2015 Move Awards. He was one of the three finalists along with Clarissa Delgado, CEO of Teach for the Philippines, and Ben Chan, chairman and CEO of Bench.

Your Voices Heard: Discrimination Against Frosh Students
From the long lines for the LRT and elevators to the class suspension, someone would always blurt out “kasalanan ‘to ng mga Frosh!”. In this video feature, we tried to decode the reason behind this unavoidable discrimination happening around the school. The upperclassmen students and the freshmen themselves shared their thoughts and opinion regarding the issue.

Breaking free from the street children notion
When Tonton Buenavidez and Vincent Dagangan returned a wallet to Samantha Orbe, a Benildean student, they didn’t expect their story to go viral. By the time ABS-CBN News interviewed them on why they did it, they shared a simple reason: “Kapag namatay kami, hindi kami kukunin ni Lord.” (If we die, God will not save us.) For many of us, such words remain an expression. But for these two children, it meant doing good things for His glory.

Travel Grant now approved for Scholars
Approved by the College’s President Council, financial scholars of DLS-CSB are now eligible to apply for a travel grant starting the previous term. According to the Policy on Travel Award for Financial Scholars of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academics (OVCA), “the call for application would be released by the School or Program initiating the student’s trip. The student would then submit a letter of application indicating his/her intent to apply for the travel grant and how it can contribute to his/her academic experience and future career objectives.”

Team Elite danced their hearts out for a 3-peat win during this year’s Remix competition held at Yuchengco Hall at De La Salle University last November 6, winning first place in both Org-Based and Open Categories.

Benilde creates new record in MUN with 13 awards
The College’s official delegation to this year’s Model United Nations (MUN) held at Washington, D.C. bagged 13 awards, setting a new record for the most number of awards a delegation has brought in since the College has started participating in various MUNs. Benilde also participated in NMUN Europe last November in Czech Republic, and the Citi Pan Asia MUN earlier this December in Taiwan. Next in their line up will be the NMUN New York and Harvard WorldMUN in Italy, both in March 2016.

Dante’s Purgatory: Love Gone Wrong/Love Redeemed
In celebration of Dante Alighieri’s 750th birth anniversary, the College with Societa Dante Alighieri Manila and the Embassy of Italy in Manila held Dante’s Purgatory – Love Gone Wrong/ Love Redeemed, an afternoon of cosplay, performances, music and fanfare in site-specific installations at the Taft campus, streets of Leon Guinto and Pablo Ocampo, and the School of Design and Arts campus last November 13. ‘Manang Biring’ wins Best Film in CinemaOne Originals
Animated comedy-drama ‘Manang Biring’ brought home the Best Film, Best Music, and Champion Bughaw awards in the the 2015 CinemaOne (C1) Originals Festival in November. Directed by Carl Joseph Papa, the rotoscoped scenes captured the emotions of going through lengths of fighting a terminal illness just to be with a love one for the last time. Part of film’s production team were Benildean animation students and alumni/faculty.

Angelia Ong crowned Miss Earth 2015
Marketing Management student Angelia Gabrena Ong was crowned Miss Earth 2015, succeeding Philippines’ Jamie Herrel, Miss Earth 2014, last December 5 (December 6 in PH time) in Vienna, Austria. In the question and answer portion, she was asked to come up with slogan for the next 15 years of Miss Earth. “We will, because we can,” Ong answered. “I want to let everybody know that all things are possible and all things are feasible if we work together. We will, because we can,” she expounded. She is the second Benildean to win in an international beauty pageant, after Megan Young became Miss World last 2013.

Benildeans place in Pinoy Ultimate Jeepney
Led by Francesca Jane Saquibal, a team of Benildeans crafted a jeepney design that won the People’s Choice Award in the annual Pinoy Ultimate Jeepney (PUJ) competition last December 19 at Resorts World Manila.

Benildeans receive awards in MMFF
Popular TV personality and Benilde alumna, Maine Mendoza also known as “Yaya Dub” won Best Supporting Actress for “My Bebe Love” in the Metro Manila Film Festival Awards Night Last December 27. The animated film “Buttons” made by AB Animation students Marvel Obemio, Francis Ramirez and Jared Garcia also won the New Wave Best Animation Film. “Alamat ng Giraffe” by the College’s Karilyo Shadowplay Team was also a finalist in the same category.
Despite the issues on drugs and internal conflicts in the student body, the year that passed still proved to be a full-year sweep of success for Benilde. These were only a part of the people who contributed to continuous rise of our alma mater. As the book of 2015 closes, the list goes on in 2016. Are you ready for more? We definitely are.
