The annual Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) was held on June 10 in Cupertino, California, with the incorporation of A.I. across its ecosystem at its center. WWDC highlighted the tech giant’s commitment to innovation and technology advancement. Here’s a rundown of the developments to look out for from Apple moving forward:

Apple Intelligence

After A.I. took the world by storm, the news of Apple integrating its very own Apple Intelligence to enhance the capabilities of their technology was no surprise. It's A.I. will uniquely be a personal and private intelligence system, eliminating the need to switch between apps. Here are the key features of Apple Intelligence:

  • Privacy: Data will be processed on the device itself and on the private cloud computer where information is not stored or accessible to even Apple themselves.
  • Writing tools: Advanced proofreading and suggestive writing with the ability to adjust the tone, generate explanations behind edits, and summarize text in different formats
  • Personalized assistance: A.I. will have the ability to process relevant personal information to help users by recognizing and prioritizing important notifications and assisting in scheduling events.
  • Task assistance: A.I. can execute your personal tasks and access different apps like organize files sent by a specific person over a period of time.
  • Image Playground: Quickly creates generative photos with three styles – sketch, illustration, and animation. Available in Messages, Pages, Freeform, and in its own app.
  • Genmoji: Allows users to bring their dream emojis to life by simply describing it.

Apple Intelligence will exclusively run in the pro models of the iPhone 15, M1 or newer versions of both the iPad Air and the iPad Pro, and the Macbook Air and the Macbook Pro. Apple Intelligence will also make its way to the M1 or newer versions of the iMac, Mac mini, and Mac Studio.

The famous virtual assistant will also be upgraded to improve responses and overall user experience. Its logo got a makeover too, now glowing and colorful. Siri is now equipped with the ability to understand and remember context across different conversations, allowing it to better predict users' needs and support Apple Intelligence. Along with these updates, Siri can now be easily accessed by a simple double tap at the bottom of the screen.

In addition to this, users can direct questions or requests to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and the world renowned A.I. will be accessible for free on all devices.

The updated iOS is highly customizable with interactive widgets that can display real-time information that can now be accessed from the lock screen as well. Apple users can now freely move around apps and customize its colors to match their wallpaper for a more aesthetic look.

The new operating system also includes the biggest update for the photo app, allowing it to work at a simple grid and allows users to organize and filter pictures based on topics, content, and location.

Moreover, Rich Communication Services support will finally enable iPhone users to send high-quality photos and videos to their Android user friends. Aligned with Apple’s commitment to privacy, users can now enable Face ID to unlock specific apps. Lastly, new tools have been created to track mental health with mood logging and mindfulness reminders.

Apple seemed to make up for its lack of a calculator for 14 years by providing it with Apple Pencil support and the ability to solve different mathematical equations in an instant. Moreover, a Smart Script feature was added to enhance the notetaking experience by improving handwriting and spell-checking any errors. Multitasking was also made easier for iPad users with a redesigned control center and floating tab bar. Lastly, the same customizing options from the iOS18’s home screen and lock screen are also available in the iPadOS18.

Users can also drag and drop texts and images between the two and respond to phone notifications using their laptop. Safari is also revamped with Highlights which uses machine learning to summarize the content of a page.

On its 10th anniversary, the Apple Watch was also made more customizable with personalized widgets that  appear when you need them. It also has new health features like pregnancy tracking, fitness training, blood pressure monitoring, and sleep apnea detector. The device is also equipped with Dexcom, a real-time glucose monitor, to allow it to monitor health more comprehensively. The new Vitals app allows users to glance at their health metrics like heart rate, respiratory rate, skin temperature, and blood oxygen from a small dashboard. In addition, the new Training Load measures how workouts impact personal fitness over time with a score to track progress.

Second, new hand gestures were added to quickly access the home view and control center. Lastly, Mac Virtual Display will have an ultra wide display with high resolution, equivalent to two 4K monitors side by side.

Moreover, Apple is currently developing various training and simulation applications to aid healthcare, manufacturing, aerospace, and other industries.

The Vision Pro will be made available in more countries like China, Singapore, Canada, Australia, France, and the United Kingdom.

The new software update for the Apple TV will “take home entertainment to the next level.” InSight shows actors' names in the movie or tv series along with their personal background and view the song that is playing on screen in real time. Subtitles got smarter as they can appear at the right moments when another language is being used and once the television is muted. Enhanced dialogue, which enhances vocal clarity, can now be enjoyed through speakers, bluetooth devices, and on the iPad and iPhone.
