After two weeks of racket action, the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Blazers’ Badminton squads proved their dominance at the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Badminton tournament, last September 6 to September 21, at the Powerplay Badminton Court, Quezon City.
For five consecutive years, the Lady Blazers has been the reigning Badminton champions in the Women’s division, and have not failed clutching onto it this season. Bannering Benilde were 4-time NCAA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Nikki Servando and Allizandra Candelaria for the Women’s Single Division, and Danyl Escobar and Angel Oclinaria for the Women’s Doubles Division. Servando also secured another MVP title, making it her fifth and last for the College.
“The result [of the event] brought me happiness since it’s already my last playing year for the College,” shares Servando.
At the same event, however, the Blazers Men’s Badminton team’s five-year streak was snapped short by the Colegio de San Juan de Letran (CSJL) smashers and fell to second place.
“It was a close fight, so nakakalungkot, kasi kami ‘yung champions before,” claimed Gio Angsico on their defeat. Angsico, together with Gico Libiran, represented the College in the Men’s Doubles Division and Austin Sangalang represented the College in the Men’s Singles Division.
Unlike Servando, however, the men still have a shot at redemption. “We have another year to prepare and prove that we deserve to be the champions all over again,” claimed Sangalang.
