For the third year in a row, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) celebrated World Industrial Design Day 2015 with the theme “Redefine Design” through a week-long event where industrial design students from different schools gathered to showcase designs, compete and listen to seminars. Organized by the Benildean Industrial Designers (BInD), the event lasted from June 29, 2015, the exact date of World Industrial Design Day, to July 3, 2015.
On the first day of the week-long event, a series of talks were held in the 5th floor of the School of Design and Arts (SDA) building, where well known speakers such as Dan Matutina, co-founder of Plus63 Design Co., Milo Naval, one of the pioneers of Philippine design, and 13 Lucky Monkeys, a company known for sculpting jewelry, gave talks about their specified fields.
The following day, BInD hosted games for industrial design students on the industrial design swing space, 14th floor of SDA. The next day was a friendly competition among schools, where Mapua Institute of Technology bagged first place, DLS-CSB won second place and Miriam College took home third place. Both the games and the competition were based on basic industrial design skills, like packaging.
An acquaintance night was then held at the SDA 12th floor amphitheater for the industrial design students, which gave them the opportunity to get to know each other. On the last day, Kenneth Cobonpue, a well-known international industrial designer and program chair of the Industrial Design program of DLS-CSB, gave a seminar where he shared with the students his works, gave them advice, and answered their questions.
“The Redefine Design idea came from the International Council for Industrial Designers; we hold it every year in CSB because it has enough space to accommodate everyone. The purpose of the event is that schools that have Industrial Design like Mapua, UP, TUP, get together in one venue, because the community of Industrial Design is very small, so this is our annual meet.” Juan Miguel Gabrino said, President of the Benildean Industrial Designers.
Students from: University of the Philippines (UP), University of Santo Tomas (UST), University of the East (UE), Mapúa Institute of Technology, Bohol Island State University (BISU), Technological University of the Philippines (TUP), Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP), and Miriam College joined DLS-CSB in celebrating World Industrial Design Day.
