After three to four years of preparation, and having fulfilled all needed requirements, the Bachelor of Art in Multimedia Arts (AB-MMA) degree program of the College was granted Level I accreditation status by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) last April 24th, 2015, an accolade that will last for three years.

Under the leadership of MMA chairperson Ms. Vanessa Puente, faculty Ms. Lanie Rallos and other members of the MMA department, teams were formed to watch over specific aspects of the course that were required by PAASCU—namely the faculty, laboratories, curriculum and instruction.

Accreditation required three phases which were: (1) the preliminary survey visit led by Ms. Rallos last March 18-19, 2013, which required PAASCU to visit the College and give recommendations for further improvement, (2) the consultancy visit also led by Rallos last August 11-12, 2014, which according to Puente is “to check if we are ready for the formal survey.” Lastly, (3) the formal survey visit led by Puente last March 26-27, 2015 wherein the College should acquire favorable ratings from the PAASCU formal survey team.

According to Puente, teamwork and coordination was what carried them until the end. In an interview with Mr. Jose Yupangco, dean of the School of Design and Arts (SDA), he mentioned that “the immediate benefit of the accreditation is that it give[s] credibility to the program, as it would allow the students to get employment more easily.” He added that what’s more important is that it “elevates the quality of education to a level where there is an agency that’s making sure that the program is continually renewing itself.”

Yupangco also shared that receiving PAASCU’s accreditation is part of his plan to taking the next step that “we turn global, in a local way,” as he intends to be “parallel to the educational standards of the best schools in the world,” but also “capitalize the local aspect of being Filipino.”

The benefits of receiving an accreditation from PAASCU also include: a clearer self-image (of the College) as membership gives the institution and its faculty a sense of direction as PAASCU will always monitor their accredited schools, the facilitation of transfer students; a guidance for parents and students in choosing worthy schools, and the added prestige for member schools.
