As his first art exhibit in the Philippines, Michael Lin, who hails from Taiwan is featured by the College’s Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD) through his exhibition entitled Locomotion, running until May 16.
Known for his behemoth depictions of flowers, Lin paints the MCAD’s white walls with bright pastel colors and floral patterns. The palette is predominantly yellow, different from Lin’s previous works as Locomotion provides subtler imagery compared to his usual high-contrasting and vibrant murals, with his flowers strewn over the bright background.
Lin’s art often involves the viewer thoroughly immersed in his works, as portrayed by Untitled Gathering, Manila (2016)—a mosaic-esque assemblage of stools featuring his flowers at the top.
Expanding his art’s audience, the Taiwanese artist sought the aid of the pedicab. Lin coordinated with 15 pedicab operators to install his art on by providing them new tarpaulins. He describes the experience as “an exchange” since these pedicabs will roam in their respective barangays carrying his art. “It has made me popular in the area – they [referring to the pedicab drivers] wave at me whenever I walk around,” Lin adds.
