Effective July 1, 2017, former Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Br. Armin Luistro FSC will serve as the President of De La Salle Philippines (DLSP) until March 2020, taking over the unfinished term of outgoing President Br. Jose Mari Jimenez FSC.

As DepEd Secretary from 2010 to 2016, under former President Benigno Aquino III, he was one of the main proponents of the K+12 Basic Education Program. Though the program initially received widespread criticism due to the added two years’ worth of tuition fees, according to Br. Luistro it aims to produce more competitive high school graduates.

Other notable events during his tenure as secretary center around his work on advocating for sex education from grade 5 to fourth year highschool. Though the inclusion of sex education was not a main priority under Br. Luistro, it was sparked some controversy among certain religious authorities in the country.

Before his service in DepEd, Br. Luistro also served as the President and Chancellor of De La Salle University from 2004 to 2010.

Meanwhile, the outgoing Br. Jimenez served as the DLSP President from 2012 to 2017. He will remain a member of the National Mission Council, and will focus on his work as the Auxiliary Visitor for Strategic Planning and District Development of the Lasallian East Asia District (LEAD).

Br. Luistro’s appointment was made by the members of the National Mission Council of DLSP.
