The Benildean Press Corps (BPC) triumphed in the prestigious 40th Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA) by winning Best Literary Publication for Shades of Gray: Convalescence, the official literary folio of Benildean students, on November 14 at Star Theater, Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex.
BPC, the official student-journalists’ organization of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB), bested a total of eleven entries. Five finalists were nominated for the award, including “Jukebox: The Guilds Literary Folio” by Bataan Peninsula State University Main Campus, “Mirage ‘Abrakadabra’” by Lyceum of the Philippines University Batangas, “Morpheme” By De La Salle University Dasmariñas, and “The Lathe Art Compilation” by Batangas State University.
With “Convalescence” as the theme of the winning literary folio, poems and stories about chaos, defeat, conflicts, recovery, and resolution were featured.
Meanwhile, out of 21 entries, BPC was also recognized for being a finalist in the Best Student Organ (College) category with The Benildean: Preservation issue. The Benildean, a magazine-journal, is the official student publication of the College, as well as BPC’s flagship publication. Five finalists were nominated for the award, including “CVSU – R Rexus Tabloid” by Cavite State University CCAT Campus, “Fixed Magazine” by Lyceum of the Philippines University Batangas, “Phoenix Tabloid” by Lyceum of the Philippines University Batangas, and “Sensus Communis: The Lathe Journal” by Batangas State University.
Its fourth volume and 13th issue, Preservation, featured stories on preserved cultures, traditions, customs, and ideologies which urges the society to protect them before they are gone.
“The Truth Will Set You Free”
To kick off the awarding ceremony, CMMA Acting Chairman D. Edgard A. Cabango gave the welcoming remarks, followed by a reading of Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle’s special message by CMMA Executive Director and Trustee Rev. Fr. Rufino Secson Jr. The CMMA, with the theme “The Truth Will Set You Free,” welcomed 289 finalists, community leaders, media practitioners, student journalists, and guests.
The awardings proceeded hosted by TV personalities Carlo Lorenzo and Eugene Domingo, accompanied by Fr. Hans Magdurulang.
Musical performances were rendered by CMMA awardees Bugoy Drilon, Ogie Alcasid, and Moira Dela Torre as they sang “One Day,” “Di ka Pababayaan,” and “Tagpuan” respectively. In addition, dance performances by La Salle Dance Company Contemporary and Hiyas ng Pilipinas Dance Troupe entertained the audience.
