Oedipus: the prophecy foretold in the language of the Filipino

With its loom of betrayal, incest, and tragedy, the College’s Dulaang Filipino (DF) artists re-enacted the unfortunate tale of King Oedipus with their striking performance at the Augusto-Rosario Gonzalez (ARG) Theater.

As one of the well-known greek mythology stories, Sophocles’ Oedipus was performed for the fourth time since 2014 by Office of the Culture and Arts (OCA) Dulaang Filipino (DF) artists under Director Riki Benedicto in preparation for an international theatrical competition.

From its tribal stage designs to exuberant choreography stunts, OCA’s DF main leads portrayed by AJ Castro (Oedipus)—who selfishly murdered his father Seth Dela Llana (Creon), married his mother named Jocasta and had an intimate relationship with his daughter Uzziel Delamide (Antigone)—gave a chilling performance as the audience immensely felt the horrifying experience in their seats.

In addition, Benilde’s Oedipus Theban trilogy play will be the only non-theater school-produced entry from Asia to compete at “The International Festival of Theater Schools: SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER 2019” in Brno, Czech Republic on April 2 to 6, 2019.
