While Japanese cuisine is becoming a hit among food lovers, the prices have seemingly become a great priority. Located at Archer’s Place in Taft, Manila, Miss Umami: Japanese Takeouts features a wide range of Japanese delicacies and at the same time, offers on-the-go food quality that will surely bring convenience for students rushing for their next classes.

Opened on January 2017, restaurant owner Mrs. Toni Go narrated how the restaurant started from pop-up stores in bazaars offering Do-It-Yourself (DIY) poke bowls and “sushiritos” to a special go-to restaurant for students.

“We realized that a number of customers [are] looking for an actual place where they can come and dine. [However], they don’t know where will our next pop up store will be thus, we decided to open the actual restaurant in Taft,” she said in an email interview with The Benildean.

From choosing different varieties of sushi and takoyaki to customizing your very own poke bowl, Miss Umami offers an extensive menu. Some of its best sellers include: Someone to Lava (Php 109), sushi roll filled with spicy tuna, coated with crushed hot cheetos and topped with cheese, Kani Fry (Php 79), and Truffle Takoyaki (Php 240 for 24 pieces).

Aside from their appetizers, they also offer rice bowls such as the Mt. Beefz Roy (Php 130) that includes white rice topped with beef cuts drizzled with melted cheese and their customized poke bowls which you can choose among different proteins from Tuna (Php 150) to Wagyu Cubes (Php 250) and at the same time, customize the base, the sauce and the toppings that you wish to combine with your chosen protein.

Go, a De La Salle University (DLSU) graduate, knew the struggle of a student’s life so she considered this factor to offer food that is on-the-go without sacrificing quality and nutrition.

In addition, she also gave an inside scoop to what customers can look forward to the restaurant regarding improvements ranging from small renovations during breaks to expanding their menu.

“In the coming weeks, we will start serving unique breakfast dishes accompanied with freshly brewed coffee. Soon, we would also be releasing poke burgers to add a new depth for our poke line,” she said.

Miss Umami: Japanese Takeout is open from Monday to Saturday (10 a.m. to 10 p.m.), at the 2nd floor Archer’s Place, Taft, Manila (beside Ersao).
