Benilde bags 1st runner-up in Quill’s ‘School of the Year’ for third straight year


Out of five nominees for the School of the Year category, the College secured its place as first runner-up and bagged 20 merit and excellence awards.

The De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde placed first runner-up in the Student of the Year category of the 7th Philippine Student Quill Awards for the third time in a row, with 13 merit awards and seven excellence awards bagged by Benildeans yesterday, August 30, at the Marriott Grand Ballroom, Pasay City.

Emphasizing on the theme “Shaping the Future,” Belle Tiongco, IABC President and Co-founder of Football for Humanity, congratulated the awardees through her opening speech, “As communicators, you have the power to shape the future because you have the power to share ideas that can change the world […] And this afternoon is a testament to that skill,” she said.

Meanwhile, according to Dave Devilles, 17th Philippine Quill Awards Chairperson, the Student Quill standards have been aligned to the Professional Quill standards. 

Tiongco ended her speech with a message for the awardees, “Change the conversation, change the future and change the world, young people.”

Inclined with the theme #ExpressYourTruth, Devilles encouraged the student awardees to fight against fake news “by speaking your truth, and shining the light on present issues that affect not just yourself, but the rest of society, you have proven that you can shape the future,” he said.

University of Santo Tomas was named School of the Year for the sixth year while first runner-up Benilde bested third placer University of Rizal System-Binangonan. Other schools nominated were De La Salle University-Dasmarinas and UST Angelicum College.

Out of five nominees under the category of Communication Skills, UST Angelicum College’s “Engkuwentro” bagged the Top Award over DLS-CSB’s “En Route to Human Extinction,” and UST’s “Award to Mocha, Libel to UST,” “A Resilient Daughter’s Silent Battle Cry,” and “The 4th UST National Campus Journalism Awards.”

The Benildean Press Corps, the College’s official student-journalists’ organization, was the biggest contributor in the College’s win with a total of 14 merit and excellence awards.

According to IABC Philippines, the 7th Philippine Student Quill Awards received 254 entries, but only 74 winners were given recognition in accordance with the International Gold Quill standards.

The Philippine Student Quill honors students with exemplary communication research, programs, skills, and creative work given by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Philippines.
