Released on March 6, 2020, “Chilombo” is the third album of American singer-songwriter Jhené Aiko. With melancholia as the album’s main theme, Chilombo reflects both good and bad experiences of relationships. Nine songs have been added on the 20-track album as the Deluxe version was released on July 17.

In an interview, Aiko explained the meaning behind the album’s title. “Chilombo is a word that means “wild beast”—they’re strong, confident and graceful…Beasts are also beautiful.” Aiko also shared that it was derived from her full name: Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo.

“Chilombo” album is released by Def Jam, ArtClub International, and ARTium Recordings.

Explicit content: a rhythm for your soul

Grammy-nominated artist Jhené Aiko has garnered over 500 million streams. With her certified-platinum singles featuring “Triggered,” “None of your concern” ft. Big Sean and “P*$$Y Fairy (OTW),” Aiko’s wispy voice gives justice to her latest album.

From mellow to sudden beat drops of songs and interludes, Chilombo’s intro has already given sensual vibes with “Lotus.” By listening to it in chronological order, savor those “could have been” and regrets, exude power, and of course, stand back up once again.

Meanwhile, if you’re in the mood to listen for a candle-lit-date-night type of song, “Lightning & Thunder” ft. John Legend is perfect for your romantic treat during the quarantine.

When life gives you lemons, however, meditate with “Magic Hour.” Released on May 9, “It ain’t perfect, but everything’s beautiful now,” the lyrics speak for a tune to listen to while staring at a beautiful sunset.

Moreover,  “Happiness Over Everything (H.O.E)” is a mix of Aiko’s suave vocals complementing Future & Miguel’s raspy voice which is dedicated to everyone wanting to chill, have fun, and get wasted because YOLO. Another bop song, “Party For Me” ft. Ty Dolla $ign summons as a tribute for American rapper Nipsey.

Starting its Deluxe part from piano to audio version, “Above and Beyond” is a masterpiece.

Completing the additional nine songs, Chilombo has collaborations with artists such as Kehlani with “B.S.,” “Down Again” with Wiz Khalifa, “Tryna Smoke” featuring Snoop Dogg and Chris Brown, and “On The Way” with Mila J.

Supplementary recommendations

  • “Speak” – Moving on from a heartbreak? This song is for people who left a toxic relationship. With lyrics, “F*ck your opinion ’bout it. I’m feeling my best. I won’t hide it,” prove that knowing one’s worth should always be a priority.

  • “Born Tired” – Sad hours again. Indulge yourself with this track as you contemplate with dreams, failures, and goals in life. Aiko’s voice will calm you down despite being “born tired” and actually getting-tired-from-everything.

  • “All Good” – An anthem for sensitive boys; not serious men. Just let the lyrics flow: “Just when it’s turning into something good. Just when it’s turning out the way that it should. Think you should let it be the way that it could.”

  • “Summer 2020” – Following the interlude, the 29th track is an ode to a nonexistent summer season and happiness. “Times are changing, strangers getting stranger…Try to make my way through pain and anger,” a must-listen to as rain pours down outside flourishing its petrichor scent.

From graceful to upbeat chill music, Jhené Aiko continues to shine with her new set of songs. Aiko’s captivating voice—hushed to rap tones—surely blesses her listeners.

To boost your self-esteem or unleash your inner rebellious side, listen to Chilombo.
