In celebration of International Youth Day, Youth Advocates for the Philippines (YAP) in partnership with the Benilde Committee on Student Involvement and other Philippine youth-led organizations, organized Archipelago Rising: Youth Engagement for Global Action, a 24-hour online conference via Facebook live, today, August 12.

To realize the youth’s importance in being advocates, #Archipelago2020 has prepared a series of panel sessions, online discussions, and other activities with a concert at the end of the conference, which aims to establish the importance of the Filipino youth as advocates.

The following are the goal of the International Youth Day celebration:

  • Understand the significance of the Filipino Youth in achieving nation-building thus engaging for global action.
  • Bring together the youth for significant discussions and discourses towards one unified goal on a local, national, and global level.
  • Establish meaningful connections and active participation resulting in effective coordination.
  • Highlight youth-led and/or youth-focused solutions being done to aid the youth despite that COVID-19 situation in the Philippines.

Among the invited guests of #Archipelago2020 are Vice President of the Philippines Leni Robredo, Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray, Chairperson of Free Legal Assistance Group Chel Diokno, Miss Philippines Earth Water 2020 Gianna Llanes, Filipino weightlifter and Benildean Hidilyn Diaz, Senator Kiko Pangilinan, Miss Philippines Earth 2020  Roxie Baeyens and Awardee of Ten Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service 2019 Samira Gutoc.

The International Youth Day was established on August 12, 1999, paving the way for its celebration annually. The United Nations recommended that public information activities be organized to support and in celebration of the International Youth Day, and as a way to promote better awareness of the World Programme of Action for Youth, which was adopted by the General Assembly in 1995.
