About the speaker

William “Whilce” Portacio is a Filipino-American comic book writer and artist. From starting out as an inker at Marvel Comics in 1985, Portacio ventured into penciller assignments. Some of his famous works include: The Punisher, X-Factor, Wetworks, and Uncanny X-Men.

He was born in Sangley Port, Cavite City. His family moved to the United States and settled in San Diego, California. At the age of 10, his love for comic books began when he discovered the works of comic book legends such as Jack Kirby and Neal Adams, who were major influences on his art style.

In 1992, Portacio served as co-founder, alongside six prolific artists, of the creator-owned publishing company Image Comics. Portacio also launched Wetworks in 1994 for Image co-founder Jim Lee’s Wildstorm imprint.

Other notable series crafted by Portacio were Stone and Marvel's Iron Man, as part of the controversial 1996-1997 “Heroes Reborn” storyline. Meanwhile, he took part in pencilling duties for DC Comics with the monthly comic book series Batman Confidential, which debuted in 2006
