SHRIM gears up for limited F2F classes this coming 3rd term

In its final stages of being approved by CHED for the implementation of limited face-to-face classes, Benilde is prioritizing SHRIM, along with other selected SMIT and SDA programs, as it gradually reopens its doors for hands-on learning in the coming term.

De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde’s (DLS-CSB) School of Hotel Restaurant and Institution Management (SHRIM) briefed parents and students on the requirements, safety plans, and procedures for the reopening of limited face-to-face (LF2F) classes to pilot this 3T of A.Y. 2021-2022 via  Zoom on Feb. 11.

Hosted by International Hospitality Management (IHM) Chairperson Stephen Petranek, the meeting was opened by SHRIM Dean Marie Paz Castro, where she presented the safety plans and blueprints for physical distancing per facility in the Angelo King International Center (AKIC) Campus. The schedules and manual enlistment procedures of each respective track were presented by Hospitality Management (HM) Chairperson Jerwin Pineda and Culinary Arts (CA) Chairperson Margarita Marty.

Requirements for students in Limited F2F classes

During the briefing orientation, it was indicated that one of the requirements SHRIM students would have to present to enroll in LF2F classes was a proof of registration in PhilHealth or any medical insurance. However, the Office of the Registrar (RO) only listed out the following requirements in an email sent last Feb. 17:

  • PROOF OF FULL VACCINATION STATUS – either a scanned copy of the student’s vaccination card or their digital vaccination certificate issued by VaxCertPH showing proof of being fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
  • PROOF OF BOOSTER VACCINATION (only if applicable) –either a scanned copy of the student’s booster vaccination card or their digital booster vaccination certificate issued by VaxCertPH showing proof of receiving booster vaccination against Covid-19.
  • SIGNED UNDERTAKING, ASSUMPTION OF RISK, AND WAIVER - A signed templated undertaking, assumption of risk, and waiver. No notarization required.

Those part of the Most-at-Risk Population (MARP) are to coordinate with the College’s clinic before participating.

Upon entry, DLS-CSB requires everyone to have their temperature taken, and the following to be worn or presented:

  • Face Mask
  • Health Declaration Form (QR code is also accessible at campus entrance)
  • Vaccination Card (still under discussion)
  • DLS-CSB ID

Swabbing is not required by the College for students to participate in the pilot LF2F.

Pilot LF2F class setup

The total hours required per course will be divided in half—half for online and half for LF2F.

Students will be following a rotation in attending LF2F lab classes every three weeks with a maximum of eight students and one faculty allowed in the laboratory room. The College is strict with the timeline of students as the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has mandated a 5-10 rule—that of which students are only allowed to attend 5 days of LF2F classes at most, and at least 10 days of break.

Classes can start as early as 8:00 a.m. and end at 5:00 p.m. Students are also not allowed to leave the campus until their last class is finished. Moreover, online submissions such as paperwork, demos, and  submissions of portfolios will be strictly paperless, and will be done through BigSky.

Manual pre-enrollment for SHRIM

For SHRIM, manual pre-enlistment was conducted through Google Forms last Feb. 14 to 17 for those who will be enrolling in LF2F laboratory classes in the coming term. Only a maximum of four laboratory classes are allowed per student given that they have accomplished its prerequisites.

Chef Marty clarified that pre-enlistment is on a first-come-first-serve basis, but the priority batches are ID numbers 117 and 118.

Unlike the usual pre-enrollment setup, students will not be choosing their schedules for their enrolled classes, but rather will be placed on a rotation schedule organized by the SHRIM administrators.

The enrollment process for SHRIM Third Term A.Y. 21-22 is as follows:

  • Feb. 7 - 10: Building of LF2F course offerings by Program Chairs
  • Feb. 14 - 17: Manual Pre-enrollment
  • Feb. 22 - March 1: Creation of SER for students enrolled in F2F sections
  • Feb. 14 - March 15: Submission of all clinic-required and other documents to the Registrar’s Office
  • March 16-22: Release of SER to SHRIM students enrolled in LF2F sections
  • March 18-24: SHRIM confirmation of enrollment

Students who have taken a Leave of Absence (LOA) may answer the form prior to filing their return form.

Securing safety for students and faculty

Mr. Mark Lapuebla and Mr. John Zablan from the Center of Emergency Management, Safety, and Security (CEMMS) explained that regular handwashing is encouraged; wearing of face masks, maintaining a physical distance of 1.5 meters, and avoiding crowded places will be strictly implemented and monitored on campus with LF2F activities.

Temperature screening will be held at every entrance, and a holding area is designated for those who have a temperature above 37.5C. They are advised to rest in the holding area for five minutes.

On the matter of parking spaces, it still follows a first-come-first-serve basis, and all safety protocols previously mentioned will be followed. Only the SDA Campus and the AKIC Campus will have available parking spaces during LF2F classes.

DLS-CSB has also organized floor plans to be followed in accordance with safety protocols such as the pathways, rooms for LF2F and locker-changing rooms. Below is a sample floor plan of the seventh floor of the AKIC Campus.
